Taiwan is much more than the birthplace of your electronic device or bicycle! It's a spectacular subtropical island with friendly people, steep gorges, high mountains, and sweeping coasts. David Loutzenheiser and his friend Matt embarked on a bicycle tour of part of the island in November 2011. You will see agriculture on the rural east rift valley, cycling through numerous tunnels, and riding along the spectacular east coast with mountains rising abruptly up to 7,000 ft.

Taiwan's most famous natural feature, Taroko Gorge is spetacular not only for it's dramatic cliffs, water, but also the intensive infrastructure of bridges and tunnels that traverse through the gorge. Then comes the big climb up over 10,000 ft on one of the highest paved roads in southeast Asia. From the top we see the range of mountains that covers much of the country. Finally a fast descent down to the populated west side of the island to finish off at Sun Moon Lake before taking the high speed train back to Taipei.
