About us
This group is operated by Appalachian Mountain Club New York-North Jersey Chapter (7/1/22)
The New York-North Jersey Chapter of AMC was the first chapter formed by the club back in 1912. For over 100 years the NYNJ chapter has been protecting the precious natural resources of our region, providing skills and leadership training, and hosting 100's of outdoor activities every year for the public through our professional and dedicated volunteer trip leaders.
Beginner or expert the AMC NYNJ chapter has something for everyone. With activities that include hiking, biking, paddling, backpacking, skiing, climbing, and more we're sure you will find something you love. And since we know living in and around the NYC area can be difficult without a car, many of our activities are accessible through public transportation.
Beyond just the trips, training, and conservation advocacy we are a group that encourages community and camaraderie among it's members. Open and welcoming to anyone with an interest in the outdoors we hope that the shared knowledge and experiences between all of us will help you to grow within the outdoor community and create connections and friendships for a lifetime.
What sets us apart the other Meetup groups?
• Professionally trained volunteer leaders means our trips are well organized, safe AND fun!
• Easy access on public transportation to many of our activities.
• Activities are open to anyone, no membership dues are required, but your support helps.
• Your support helps us continue to protect more than 100,000 acres of land and 2,000 miles of trails under the care of the Appalachian Mountain Club.
• Beyond our volunteer led activities AMC provides opportunities for tens of thousands of youth to experience the outdoors each year through our Youth Opportunities Program.
While this Meetup Group showcases some of our best activities they don't all make it to this page and often you will only see a small fraction of what is available! If you would like to see the full assortment of upcoming activities offered by the NYNJ chapter please click here.

Women's History Month: Cass Gallagher Trail in Van Cortland Park
Van Cortlandt Park, 242nd Street and Broadway,, New York, NY, USCelebrate Florence "Cass" Gallagher during Women's History Month with a hike on the eponymous trail in Van Cortlandt Park.
Women's History Month 2026 celebrates "Leading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future" this year. No trailblazer better exemplifies this sentiment than Cass Gallagher. A long-time Bronx resident and environmental activist, she was a driving force in protecting Van Cortland Park. She was a founder of the Friends of Van Cortlandt Park, which joined with the Van Cortlandt Park Conservancy in 2019 to become the Van Cortlandt Park Alliance that we know today. In recognition of her efforts, the Cass Gallagher Nature Trail was named in her honor in 1984.
We will make our way north to explore the Cass Gallagher trail and other routes in the Northwest Forest. This 1.4 mile loop trail in the northwest portion of the park is perhaps the prettiest part of the park and a favorite location to spot wildlife. The pace will be moderate to brisk at about 2 mph on uneven terrain with hills. Expect to be out for 3 hours. If there is time and interest, we may also tour the Van Cortlandt Mansion or stop for carrot cake at Lloyd's Bakery!
Meet us at 9:30am in front of the public restrooms on Broadway, just north of the 242nd Street #1 subway station. Bus routes Bx9, BxM 3, B-L1, B-L2 and B-L3 also stop near the restrooms. Burger King and a convenience store are across the street.
Bring water and snacks/lunch. Wear weather-appropriate clothing, and sturdy shoes. Weather can be unpredictable in March, so be prepared!
Register for this trip at activities.outdoors.org or RSVP on Meetup. All participants will be asked to sign a liability waiver at the trailhead.

Clearly Indigenous: Animals of the Land, Sea & Air In Glass
National Museum of the American Indian, 1 Bowling Green New York 10004 United States, New York, ny, USWrap up your weekend with an extraordinary artistic wonderment!
This gorgeous exhibit, cleverly entitled "Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass" is worth a special visit to the Smithsonian Museum of the American Indian. Although the glass medium is decidedly modern, each piece evokes the spirit of nature. They all glow with life, from Marvin Oliver's stained glass whale and calf, to Raven Skyriver's ombre glass seahorse, to Dan Friday's bear and bird totem, to Angela Babby's enameled mosaics, and so many more. My first visit to this show left me breathless.
To share this experience, meet us in the Museum Gift Shop at 3:00pm. Admission is FREE. If there is interest afterwards, we'll head to a bar or restaurant to close out the weekend together. (Note, the exhibit is accessible, but access to museum is via stairs during construction.)

Tuesday: Hike Mianus River Park
Greenwich, CT, USOverview:
Tuesday, March 17
10 AM
Mianus Park (Greenwich, CT)
Pace: Moderate
Terrain: Low Moderate
6 miles
350 feet elevationThis is an activity announcement, not a sign-up. To sign up, go to: https://activities.outdoors.org/s/oc-activity/a5UVX00000139hJ2AQ/act00019583
Hike Details: Mianus River Park's well-maintained trails in Greenwich and Stamford offer no mountains to conquer or raging rivers to ford, and no rock scrambles or bushwacks, just an easy and pleasant ramble in a quiet, scenic portion of Fairfield County.
Starting from the southwest corner of the park in Greenwich, we'll hike counter-clockwise along the park's yellow perimeter trail, as well as smaller side trails.
We plan to maintain a steady, moderate pace throughout the hike. The route is mostly flat terrain, interspersed with a few very gentle hills; about 350 feet of total elevation over the course of the 6 mile loop (in contrast, a 6 mile hike in Harriman or Ward Pound Ridge will generally involve 1000-1500 feet of elevation). Please note that sturdy footwear is strongly advised due to rocky portions of the trails; also hiking poles if you regularly use them.Bring lunch, which we'll plan to eat at the chimney ruin at the northern tip of the park midway through our hike.
More miles options: For those seeking additional mileage, I plan to do a 2-3 mile post-hike loop at Greenwich's Babcock Preserve (4 miles away); all are welcome and no need for you to decide until after our Mianus hike.
RSVP for "yes" only, by 7 pm Monday, at https://activities.outdoors.org/s/oc-activity/a5UVX00000139hJ2AQ/act00019583 A pre-hike note, including detailed directions, will be sent to all signed up participants at that time.
AMC Health Advisory: Covid and other respiratory illnesses are circulating in our communities. Do not participate in this hike if you, or someone who you have recently been in contact with, is either infected or symptomatic.
