What we’re about
This group is operated by Appalachian Mountain Club New York-North Jersey Chapter (7/1/22)
The New York-North Jersey Chapter of AMC was the first chapter formed by the club back in 1912. For over 100 years the NYNJ chapter has been protecting the precious natural resources of our region, providing skills and leadership training, and hosting 100's of outdoor activities every year for the public through our professional and dedicated volunteer trip leaders.
Beginner or expert the AMC NYNJ chapter has something for everyone. With activities that include hiking, biking, paddling, backpacking, skiing, climbing, and more we're sure you will find something you love. And since we know living in and around the NYC area can be difficult without a car, many of our activities are accessible through public transportation.
Beyond just the trips, training, and conservation advocacy we are a group that encourages community and camaraderie among it's members. Open and welcoming to anyone with an interest in the outdoors we hope that the shared knowledge and experiences between all of us will help you to grow within the outdoor community and create connections and friendships for a lifetime.
What sets us apart the other Meetup groups?
• Professionally trained volunteer leaders means our trips are well organized, safe AND fun!
• Easy access on public transportation to many of our activities.
• Activities are open to anyone, no membership dues are required, but your support helps.
• Your support helps us continue to protect more than 100,000 acres of land and 2,000 miles of trails under the care of the Appalachian Mountain Club.
• Beyond our volunteer led activities AMC provides opportunities for tens of thousands of youth to experience the outdoors each year through our Youth Opportunities Program.
While this Meetup Group showcases some of our best activities they don't all make it to this page and often you will only see a small fraction of what is available! If you would like to see the full assortment of upcoming activities offered by the NYNJ chapter please click here.

Upcoming events (4+)
See all- Mohonk Preserve Ridge HikeMohonk Preserve Visitor Center, Gardiner, NY
RSVP will open on May 2nd at 9 am.
Moderate difficulty (2D8) but parts will be "vigorous" (see below).
Rain will cancel. This is a “drive to” hike--there is no mass transit that will get you here.Be prepared to pay the daily $15 Mohonk Preserve Fee, if you’re not a member. (If you like fantastic views and haven’t visited before, it’s worth it.)
PLEASE GOOGLE MAP IN ADVANCE to Mohonk Visitors Center, to determine appropriate time of departure so as not to make others wait. We will meet in the lot before 9:30 so we can leave on time..
The hike:
- Begin with a trip up the "Stairmaster"an impressive set of stone steps requiring your being in good aerobic condition.
- Walk along the Undercliff trail (a carriage road) and cross the steel bridge to a very short walk along Trapps Road (another carriage road)
- Turn onto the Millbrook Ridge Trail --a mostly smooth slab of rock which provides quite a climb. You'll be instantly met with dramatic 360 degree views.
- Walk along the ridge to Millbook Mountain, our highest point. We will eat lunch there while seeing a spectacular view that goes on forever.
- We will take the Millbrook Trail to the Coxing Trail and return to Trapps Road
- We will take Trapps Road back to Undercliff where we will likely see some climbers hanging from ropes
- Back down the Stairmaster to the Visitor Center.
The hike is about 7. 5 miles but it is rocky uneven walking for a lot of it (poles would be good to have, if you have them). We will walk at a brisk/moderate pace---more moderate on the steep parts.
Bring 2 liters of water and lunch/snacks.
Please note that Covid-19 has persisted in our region from its onset in 2020. In the interest of public health, please do not join this hike if symptomatic of Covid-19 or infected with it.

https://activities.outdoors.org/s/oc-activity/a5UUN000000dKzl2AE/act00010976 - Wanaque Ramble - Wanaque Reservoir views, Van Slyke Castle, & a Lake! (Moderate)Wanaque, Wanaque, NJ
Join leader on his backyard hike on rarely used trails in northern NJ. Exact route to be determined on day of hike by leader's whimsey and mood of group but expect 7.5 to 8.5 miles with 800'-1,000 of elevation gain in 4 hours of hiking time. Spring has sprung and hopefully the flowers that were out when 1st put this hike in will still be there on Sunday. Highlights will include magnificent views of the Wanaque Reservoir and NYC, a lake, and the Van Slyke Castle. Pace/distance at upper end of moderate and 2C+8 on the old scale.
Fit beginners welcomed and encouraged but please check with leader to see if this hike is appropriate. Be prepared for rocky trails with stream crossings. If you think you may need poles, you do. This is not a walk in the park - you will need to be properly equipped to do this hike - backpack, personal items, at least 1.5 quarts of water, lunch, and appropriate footgear. Sadly, based upon painful experience improperly equipped participants will be turned away - for both their safety and enjoyment. It is also not fair to the group. Any questions or if you want an exception, please contact the leader prior to coming.
If you are new to hiking or AMC
Leaders In Training and those considering leading are strongly encouraged to contact L. For drivers, plenty of parking!
Please note that Covid-19 persists in our region, with a recent upsurge in the number of cases. Out of consideration to fellow hikers, do not join this hike if symptomatic of Covid-19 or infected with it.
Oh, yes special bonus - the clubhouse has a hot tub/swimming pool. 1st 4 participants indicating they want to join me, can. Email me at Richard@RichardSeibel.com.
