Brisk Bronx River Pathway Walk from Kensico Dam
Details
Let's make a return visit to one of the prettiest inland greenways in our area! Today we'll barrel down the Bronx River Pathway in Westchester County.
We'll start at the Kensico Dam Plaza, a park created in 1963 around the dam built in 1917 to support New York City's Catskill water supply. To this day, the dam is operated by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. The Bronx River Pathway is part of the 807-acres Bronx River Parkway Reservation, Westchester's first county park and one of the oldest linear parks in the country. This flat, paved path winds along the Bronx River, crossing over numerous adorable walking bridges and under low-head stone bridges.
Daylight Savings time ends this morning so we will be mindful of early darkness. This particular walk will be focused on fitness. Leader sets the pace. The intention is to walk at a brisk, exercise-pace of about 2.5-3.0 miles per hour. We will stop for short breaks and a quick lunch.
Since there are a few easily accessible Metro North train stations along the Bronx River Pathway, participants can choose to break off at any point based on how you feel that day. Or, you can walk with the leader to Crestwood train station for a total of 9.5 miles.
Public Transportation is available. Take Metro North (Harlem Line) to the Valhalla Train Station. The Leader will travel on the 9:14am train from Grand Central Station arriving at Valhalla Station at 10:01am and then will walk to Kensico Dam Plaza. Find her in the train's front car.
Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring a weather appropriate layers, sun hat, sunscreen, bug spray, lunch/snacks, and 2 liters of water.
More information about the Bronx River Pathway, parking, nearby train stations, and other points of interest is at Westchester County Parks.
