FABULOUS URBAN HIKE IN FLUSHING WITH OPTION TO PARK AND MUSEUM
Details
We begin our urban hike at Main Street and Roosevelt Avenue, the epicenter of Flushing's Chinatown. From there we explore the historic houses and buildings in Flushing, many of them landmarks along the Freedom Mile in the neighborhood. Among other places we will see the 1862 Flushing Town Hall with its craft gallery inside, weeping beech trees, one which was also a living landmark, and the oldest NYC public high school, which evokes images of Oxford and Cambridge in England. We can also see the fascinating house of a famous inventor. After that part of the hike, we have an option to walk along Roosevelt Avenue, with a brief stop at the Skyview Center, Flushing's premier shopping destination, to the Boardwalk which takes us into Flushing Meadow Park. We walk along Avenue of the Americas to our final destination, the Queens Museum for those interested (free, but contributions suggested). You can get the 7 train nearby at the end.
This hike is joint with Outdoors Club Inc., and you need to be on only one Club's going list (15 participants per group). We will walk at a steady, moderate but not slow pace over a distance of around 5 miles, stopping at places of interest. There will be no lunch stop, so bring some snacks along if you wish. (This hike is intended for adults 18 years and older and please no dogs).
Precipitation, as well as potentially unsafe ground conditions from ice or snow, or even questionable forecast may cancel, postpone or modify; check website for latest updates. To get to the meeting spot, take the 7 train to Main Street in Queens. Exit at Main (west side) and Roosevelt Avenue and meet at McDonalds on 4018 Main Street near Roosevelt Avenue at 12:30 PM.
