Series Overview: Hike just one or collect the whole set as we traverse the southernmost portions of the Long Path from its start in Washington Heights north to Harriman State Park - about a dozen hikes in all. Whenever practical these will be loop hikes - it’s about the journey, not the destination, right? Many segments are rated Moderate or Easy and are suitable for new hikers, and many will also be public transit-friendly. Long Path (one-way) distance previously hiked: 23.9 miles.

Hike #8: Our trek towards Harriman State Park is more than half-done! Today's hike will be a one-way journey and will require a car shuttle before the hiking can start. We'll gather at Buttermilk Falls County Park in West Nyack, NY (41.087131, -73.947444), shuttle cars to the end point, and then start walking. Passing Buttermilk Falls (hope for a nice display of ice!) in about a mile we'll connect with the Long Path, which we'll then follow northward through the streets and wooded hills of Nyack, including about a mile of road walking. At the north end of town the Long Path takes a right hook to begin the ascent of Hook Mountain, at 712 feet the highest elevation we've reached to date on this hiking series. We'll trace this ridge high above the Tappan Zee for another two miles, criss-crossing the boundaries between Hook Mountain, Nyack Beach, and Rockland Lake State Parks and enjoying expansive river views until we reach the day's end point near Rockland Lake.

Distance, Elevation Gain, and Difficulty: 6.7 mi., 1,550 ft. elevation gain, a challenging Moderate

Meet: 9:00 AM at the Buttermilk Falls County Park parking lot, 257 S Greenbush Rd (CR 11), West Nyack, NY 10913 (41.087131, -73.947444). Drivers will then shuttle vehicles to the end point. We'll start hiking by 9:45 AM. End Time: 2:45 PM.

Transportation: There is no public transit within reasonable walking distance, but carpooling is possible if there are willing drivers. After registering please use the Messenger feature on the registration page (login required) or write to the leader to indicate that you need or can offer a ride.
