The Lenape Trail and South Mountain Reservation (moderate)

This destination lets us experience hiking in the winter woods without really leaving the suburbs. South Mountain Reservation is a 2000+ acre park and nature preserve, complete with waterfalls and an extensive trail system. Train riders should take the 9.11 train from Penn Sta., arr. Millburn at 9.56. See also https://content.njtransit.com/sites/default/files/pdfs/rail/2025/06/80002/mne.pdf . Some parking places will be available for drivers at the trailhead (Locust Grove). Alternatively, use the station parking lot. We all meet for the hike at the Locust Grove parking area.
The hike will be about 7 miles long with 1000 feet of elevation gain. Expect packed snow on trails. Traction devices are strongly recommended. There will be an optional diner stop in Millburn after the hike.
A significant snowstorm will cancel this hike. Light snow, or a possibility of it, will not.
