Full event details and registration are only available through the Appalachian Mountain Club website. Please do not RSVP via Meetup.
Series Overview: Hike just one or collect the whole set as we traverse the southernmost portions of the Long Path from its start in Washington Heights north to Harriman State Park - about a dozen hikes in all. Whenever practical these will be loop hikes - it’s about the journey, not the destination, right? Many segments are rated Moderate or Easy and are suitable for new hikers, and many will also be public transit-friendly. Long Path (one-way) distance previously hiked: 29.2 miles.
Hike #9: The next link in our chain takes us to the northern half of Hook Mountain State Park, between Nyack and Haverstraw, NY. We'll start off nothbound on the Long Path along the top of an undulating ridge that overlooks the Tappan Zee and Haverstraw Bay. We'll eventually reach the spot where General Benedict Arnold met with British spymaster Major John André on September 22, 1780 to plot the surrender of West Point (spoiler: things didn't work out for them as planned). We'll then make our way down to the water's edge and head south on the River Trail to return to our starting place. The dramatic ice formations in the Hudson alone should be worth more than the price of admission (free), and the cross-Hudson vistas from the ridge top towards Ossining ain't so shabby, either!
Distance, Elevation Gain, and Difficulty: 6.8 miles, 1,000 ft. elevation gain, a solid Moderate
Meet: 9:45 AM at the Rockland State Park hikers parking lot, 88 Landing Rd, Valley Cottage, NY, 10989 (41.143456, -73.912807). We'll start hiking by 10:00 AM. End Time: 2:30 PM.
