Cafe Society Walk, Part 2 (Bushwick)
Details
Following up on last year’s Part 1, in which we focused more on Ridgewood, Part 2 will focus on the cafes of Bushwick (plus a few small bookstores). This is a great walk for coffee enthusiasts. We plan to visit at least 20 cafes, none of them part of any kind of corporate chain store or franchise operation. Purchasing cups of coffee and bags of beans is strongly encouraged. Let's give these nice places a little business! And coffee won't be the only thing on the menu -- several of the cafes serve pastries and other small dishes. Of course, this is really all just an excuse to go for a walk around one of NYC’s many fascinating neighborhoods. Bushwick still has its rough edges, but it is an up and coming area with a lot of young, creative people living in it, as well as many interesting streets and buildings.
We will be walking at a moderate pace along city streets for a total distance of 4-5 miles. There will be no lunch stop, but it will be possible to pick up a snack to keep you going. Please wear good walking shoes and clothes that can handle a few hours of walking in possibly cold weather. Bathroom breaks will be available at some of the places we will visit. You may leave early if you want to, but finding a nearby subway or bus stop will be your responsibility.
At the end of this urban hike, those who are interested are welcome to join the leader for a beer at a local brewpub, and possibly for something to eat as well. We will meet on Wyckoff Avenue near the Jefferson Street subway station (on the L line), and finish the hike either there or nearby.
