Series Overview: Hike just one or collect the whole set as we traverse the southernmost portions of the Long Path from its start in Washington Heights north to Harriman State Park - 11 hikes in all. Whenever practical these will be loop hikes - it’s about the journey, not the destination, right? Most segments are rated Moderate and are suitable for new hikers, and many will also be public transit-friendly. Long Path (one-way) distance previously hiked: 32.3 miles.
Hike #10: Ah, the first "link" of spring will be the penultimate trek in our chain, but no loop this time. After gathering at the end-point we'll shuttle to Haverstraw Beach State Park to start this one-way journey. After a brief walk on the Haverstraw River Trail we'll pause at a historic marker to recount a most infamous Revolutionary War treason. We'll then start our ascent of the Palisades Ridge vial the steep and rugged "Treason Trail." Once on Long Path we'll (very carefully) cross US 9W and make our way north on quiet back roads for 1.2 miles. Then the path heads into the woods and climbs to the top of the ridge and into High Tor State Park. Soon after we'll reach High Tor itself, at 797 ft. the greatest elevation we'll scale on this series of hikes. From here onward we'll follow the ridge as it curves sharply to the west, enjoying the occasional grand view until we reach our endpoint, where the trail meets South Central Highway (County Route 33).
Distance, Elevation Gain, and Difficulty: 6.0 miles, 1,340 ft. elevation gain, a solid Moderate
