Exploring the Siwanoy Trail and Historic Grounds of Bartow-Pell Mansion
Details
Join us for an approximately 5.5-mile hike at a moderate pace along the indigenous Siwanoy Trail in Pelham Bay Park, located in the Bronx. Pelham Bay Park is New York City's largest public park, spanning nearly 2772 acres, 3 times the size of Central Park. This hike will focus on the rustic, scenic trails in the western section of the park, avoiding Hunter Island and Orchard Beach. Participants will also explore the grounds surrounding the historic Bartow-Pell Mansion, where a historical perspective will be provided. The trails are unpaved and may have ruts and thorns in some areas, but offer beautiful views throughout. Guests are welcome to join. The #29 and #45 city buses will pass by and stop at designated bus stops. Those who wish to leave early are welcome to take the bus back. Five-mile Saunter Credit will be given to Shorewalker members. Rain cancels. As of now, we have full signage here on Meetup, but if you click the link, you will find additional spots.

Public Transportation
To reach Pelham Bay Park by subway, take the IRT number 6 train to its final stop in the Bronx. Please arrive by 9:45 AM and meet at the restrooms inside the park, located in a stone building that is easy to find. Check the subway schedule for Sunday and ensure you arrive by 9:45 AM or earlier. The ride from Manhattan is quick, and arriving early is recommended. Attendance will be taken, and the hike will begin soon after. The hike is expected to take about three hours. There is also a bus from Flushing to Pelham Bay Park.
Driving Directions
For drivers, free parking is available in Pelham Bay Park at the junction of Middletown Road and Stadium Avenue. It is strongly suggested to use a mobile map to plot your route, as the area can be tricky to navigate. Drivers should meet by 9:30 AM at the restrooms in the stone building, which is just a short walk from the parking lot.
