Have we got a Long Path Section Hike for you! Well, more like one-and-a-half section hikes rolled into one. Let's call it "Prelude to Sam's Point and Sam's Point." We'll start at mile 5.3 of Section 13 east of Ellenville, heading north on Old Route 52 before taking a jog to the southeast and climbing up into Minnewaska State Park Preserve via South Gully. Section 14 starts when we reach the Sam's Point Visitor Center, where we can top-off our water bottles. From here, if the weather cooperates, we'll have a day full of fabulous views as we traverse the escarpments and scrub pine forest of the southern Shawangunk Ridge including Sam's Point, Verkeederkill Falls, and High Point. We'll spot a car at the 17-mile mark to allow an early-out, or we can press on along a gentle rail trail to mile 19, where the Long Path crosses Rondout Creek. Whether we do 17 or 19 miles the elevation gain will be 2,575 ft., which is a Strenuous day in anyone's book.
