Minnewaska: Gertrude's Nose, Castle Rock, and More (Vigorous Hike)
Details
This will be a classic, full-day exploration of much of what Minnewaska State Park has to offer. We estimate a total distance of 12 miles or so and around 2000 feet of elevation gain. There will be a couple of rock scrambles and numerous ups and downs. This is not a walk, it is intended for fit and experienced hikers, but we will keep the pace moderate.
We will mostly be on trails, but we will spend some time on the carriage roads too. The plan is to first take the Milbrook Mountain Trail before heading over to Gertrude's Nose. Then we will make our way over to Castle Rock, before returning via the Blueberry Run and Mossy Glen Trails. Apres hike, all are welcome to join the leaders for supper at a restaurant in New Paltz.
We will meet up at 10:00 am in Minnewaska State Park, near the bathrooms in the lower parking lot, which is NOT the main parking area. Google Maps calls the lower lot the Awosting Falls Parking Lot. To get to it, you make a right turn after the park entrance booths. We plan to be on the trail by 10:10.
If you want to come by bus from NYC, it is possible to do so. You will have to take the 7:00 am bus from the Port Authority that arrives in New Paltz at 8:30 am. At that point you will have to either take a cab to Minnewaska or arrange for a ride with another member of the group. If you need a ride or can offer a ride, please post it in the chat.
Please come prepared with appropriate clothing and footwear, 2 quarts of water, a lunch, trail snacks, sunscreen, and bug spray. The leaders are Tim Burrows, Nicholas Reitter, and Jane Davis. Feel free to get in touch with any questions or comments.
