Fire Island Walk

Let’s take a scenic walk of about 6 miles to visit Cherry Grove, the Pines, Sunken Forest, and more. Enjoy open beaches on car-free Fire Island. This will be a moderately paced walk from Cherry Grove to the AMC house in Atlantique. You may also drop out at Ocean Beach to catch the ferry early. Bring lunch, water, and cash for taxi/ferry tickets.

Safety Reminders: We will be walking on the sand, in the sun for some of the walk. Please bring sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself. Part of the walk will also be through the shady trails of the Sunken Forest which can attract mosquitos and ticks. Bring bug spray. We also recommend that you wear light colored clothing and long pants for extra protection and that you check yourself for ticks after the walk.

Directions: From Penn Station take the 8:44 Huntington train to Jamaica and transfer at Jamaica to the 9:10 train to Patchogue, arriving Sayville 10:15.
From Grand Central: take the 8:39 Far Rockaway train to Jamaica and transfer at Jamaica to the 9:10 train to Patchogue, arriving Sayville 10:1
Drivers: Park at the Bay Shore station in a pay spot, or park on the street obeying the parking signs, then take the 9:58 AM train arriving at 10:15 AM in Sayville. Do not park at Sayville because our return trip ends in Bayshore (not Sayville).
Drivers should use the machine on the west track to purchase a one-way ticket from Bayshore to Sayville. Seniors can purchase a ticket on the train with no penalty.

Ferry: Purchase a one-way ferry ticket at Sayville because we will use another ferry line on our return trip. The ferry from Sayville to Cherry Grove leaves at 10:30 am.
Return: Ferries depart from Ocean Beach to Bay Shore at 3:35, 4:45, and 6:00 pm and from Atlantique to Bay Shore at 5:30 pm. Trains leave hourly.
