Trail Skills Classes
Details
Are you curious about how trails get built?
Are you a current trail maintainer interested in learning trail building skills?
Are you an experienced trail worker who wants to enhance your current skills?
Then our AMC Trail Skills Classes are for you!!
The professional trail staff from AMC is heading south to New Jersey to conduct classes in trail skills.
There will be a class in Trail Step Building, where we will be working with rocks and other material to build steps on the popular Mount Tammany Trail in Worthington State Forest at Delaware Water Gap. This may include incidental work with grip hoist/high line, though the class is not meant to be a training for that technique.
There will be a class in Trail Assessment which is about developing an eye for trail construction and improvement. This will be held on trails near AMC’s Mohican Outdoor Center.
The participants for the classes will be staying at the AMC Mohican Outdoor Center near Blairstown, N.J. A short hike from the Appalachian Trail, AMC’s Mohican Outdoor Center is located on a beautiful glacial lake in the 70,000-acre Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Swimming, canoeing and kayaking are available at the camp’s lake.
Except for the trail assessment class which will be held right out of camp late afternoon on Friday, we will commute by carpooling to the work site in Worthington State Forest (approximately 30 minutes) for the rock work all day Saturday and Sunday.
Accommodations will be in Blueberry Hill Lodge, a 16 bed cabin with 4 bunk rooms, each sleeping 4. There are 3 bathrooms and 2 showers. The lodge includes a living area with fireplace, and a full kitchen in which to cook meals. There is also a charcoal pedestal grill and a picnic table. Deli service is also available if you would rather purchase your meals than cook. There are also dining options in Blairstown, a 10-15 minute drive away.
Bring sleeping bag and/or sheets and blankets for sleeping. Pillows are provided, but you may wish to bring your own pillow case or pillow.
Bring a small day pack in which to carry your water and lunch to the worksite. Bring plenty of water and rain gear, since work will go on in the rain. You may also wish to bring insect repellent. Bring your own PPE—work gloves, safety glasses, and hard hat, if you have them; otherwise, they will be provided. Wear long pants, long sleeve shirt, and proper footwear for heavy work. All tools will be provided.
The cost for the activity is $60 for AMC members and $80 for non members, which includes trail skills instruction, 2 nights’ lodging, and lake recreation. Meals and transportation will be at your own expense.
You may pay by credit card using Outdoor Connector, or pay by check. Please contact Leader by email if paying by check.
