AN URBAN HIKE ON THE UPPER EAST SIDE WITH LOTS OF FUN SURPRISES
Details
Our urban hike highlights include a visit to the new home of Sotheby's, the world-famous auction house, as well as some others that have current exhibitions. From the start, we proceed up Fifth Avenue a short distance and make our way to the very interesting Lenox Hill neighborhood, where among other things we stop to view exhibits at the small Hunter College Art Gallery and the Americas Society (everything is free), as well as see amazing paintings and other religious artwork at a church along the way. For those with enough money left after the auction houses, we can top things off at an ice cream parlor with a Golden Opulence Ice Cream Sundae costing $1,000, which holds a Guinness record as the world's most expensive desert. We then make our way back up Madison and Fifth Avenues to view some of the interesting places and galleries there, including a visit to the Cultural Center of the French Embassy at the end. We end the day on Fifth Avenue and 79th Street with access to the subway and bus lines not far.
This hike is joint with Outdoors Club Inc., and you need to be on only one Club’s going list (15 participants per group). We will walk at a steady, moderate but not slow pace over a distance of around 4 miles, stopping at places of interest. There will be no lunch stop, so bring some snacks along if you wish. (This hike is intended for adults 18 years and older and please no dogs).
Precipitation or even questionable forecast may cancel, postpone or modify; check website for latest updates. We start our trip in front of NBC Studios in NYC at 1250 Avenue of the Americas between 49th and 50th Street at 12:30 PM in midtown Manhattan. Take any of a number of subway lines that stop at or near 47th-50th Street and Rockefeller Center.
