Glen Cove: Welwyn Preserve, Holocaust Center, Garvies Point (Suburban Hike)
Details
Please join us for the world premiere of a lovely suburban hike in Long Island's North Shore! We will pass through a number of interesting environments: suburban town streets, (with an excellent coffee shop!), forest and waterfront paths offering views of the L.I. sound, a brief visit to a Holocaust museum located in an old mansion, and at the end of it, a brewpub. There will be a bunch of nice sights to see along the way.
The total distance will be around 7-8 miles, all of it on a mix of woodland trails and suburban streets and sidewalks, and we will keep a comfortable (but not slow) pace. The hike is rated Moderate under the new system, and 3B8 under the old system. Please bring drinking water, lunch and/or snacks, and dress for a full day of walking. There are no convenient bail-out points, so if you need to leave early, you will have to return on your own.
NYC folks can take either the 9:59 am train from Grand Central or the 10:15 am from Penn Station. We will gather at the Glen Cove LIRR station at 11:30 am to begin our hike. Coffee and a bathroom break will be available shortly thereafter, and there will be 2 comfortable lavatory stops along the way. Plan on catching either the 6:10 pm or 6:52 pm return train. For drivers: there appears to be free parking at the Glen Cove station.
