Join the Bionic Man for a Fall Foliage Hike in His Backyard!

Join the leader—aka Bionic Man—for his 2nd lead after shoulder replacement surgery, adding to his collection of two hip and one knee replacements! Help him get back in shape while enjoying some of Northern New Jersey’s lesser-traveled trails at the peak of fall foliage.
As I write this on Wednesday, peak foliage is almost here, so the timing should be excellent!

This hike has it all and offers an outstanding return on energy expended. A modest initial climb (450 feet) rewards us with a magnificent ridge walk and beautiful views of the Wanaque Reservoir. We’ll continue to Van Slyke Castle before returning via Ramapo Lake.

For the car buffs among us, we’ll also see a 1950s Nash Metropolitan that is in the process of being restored.

The hike: Be prepared for approximately 9 miles and 1,200 feet of elevation gain, with about 4 hours of hiking time. Expect rocky trails and stream crossings. If you think you might need hiking poles, you probably do!

Very fit beginners are welcome and encouraged to join, but please check with the leader beforehand to make sure the hike is appropriate for your experience/fitness and that you have the proper equipment.

This hike is ideal for those who enjoy a longer outing but find the pace of a vigorous hike a bit too fast, as well as stronger hikers looking to explore a different area.

If you’ve joined me for the moderate version of this hike, please note that this one is a bit longer and faster.

Come enjoy the fall colors, scenic views, and good company on some wonderful trails—while helping the Bionic Man get back into hiking shape!
