Religion in America

Details

For this meeting we will discuss Jon Meacham's book, American Gospel. Meacham discusses the historical and political role of religion in America. He argues that the Founders wanted America to be religiously open and inclusive, allowing for anyone to believe or not believe as they choose, but also saw it as a social glue that could bind people together. The use of "God" in the public sphere was ecumenical, a word broad enough to capture all religious faiths (or no faith like those who acknowledge the grandeur in nature) rather than pointing to a God of a particular religion. Meacham argues that religion and politics have always been interconnected in America, and has been a source of good and ill. This book give us the background we need to discuss the nature of religion in America. Please join us as we continue our exploration of the American experience. All are welcome!
