Please note the previous announcement was worded incorrectly. While AU encourages everyone to go out and vote, as a non-profit we cannot and do not endorse any candidate or political party. As such we won’t be discussing those as part of this meeting. See the updated event announcement below.
The Triad Chapter of Americans United is pleased to present a virtual meeting on Friday, October 21st, 2022 at 7:00 pm. We will have a panel discussion on "Maintaining Church/State Separation on School Boards."
While it is a Friday evening, we would like to check in on the increasing threat of Christian Nationalist ideology in school boards. We will discuss ongoing legal challenges that allow the incursion of Church into State-run school district policy, and how that can negatively affect our children whose families do not ascribe to this ideology.
Cheryl Zukowski, our chapter's president, will discuss how our community can build better systems to combat this threat with an overview of how school boards are a lightning rod for the culture wars. Valerie Brockenbrough will be available to answer questions regarding local issues.
Valerie Brockenbrough is mom of 3 children (2 in College and 1 Freshman at Reynold High School), and business owner. She is a strong advocate for a thriving public education system.
Cheryl Zukowski was Vice President of the Americans United Triad Chapter since 2018, and took over as President this past summer. She has volunteered with the Carolina Federation and the Forsyth Freedom Federation since 2020. She advocates for equity in public schools and housing. Ms. Zukowski has worked as a marketing director for over 25 years, and holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania in International Relations and an MBA from Wake Forest University.
