Tamsui River Mangroves: Ecosystems, Urban Development and Colonialism

Join us as we explore a much-celebrated ecosystem: the mangrove. Mangroves have been studied thoroughly for their protective qualities, especially in areas subject to rising water levels, which we will see as climate change continues to worsen. They are habitats that support the life of many other animals and plants, and forests like the one near Hongshulin MRT have been showcased by the city with scenic paths and informational signs.

But when did these trees begin growing here, and why?

In this meeting, we will explore not only the problematic history of mangroves in Taiwan and how it connects to urban development and colonialism, but also our own connection to the land. Whether you are a visitor, a settler, or Indigenous Taiwanese, the banks of the Tamsui River both directly affect us and are themselves affected by us. Come with us as we explore our relationship with the river more deeply.

To prepare, please consider reading just one part of the book, The Anthology of Taiwan Indigenous Literature (suggested reading one section or chapter of the book)

Detailed description:
We will meet at the MRT station and then stroll around the Mangrove Ecology Trail for about 40 minutes while EJ (and anyone else with something to share) will discuss ecology, colonialism, and urban development. We will then separate for about twenty minutes so everyone can explore the mangrove on their own time. When we reconvene, everyone is encouraged to share what thoughts arose and also reflections on the reading.

Then, those who are able will walk to the Guandu Temple, where the mangrove has been removed for a construction project. The walk will be slow and take up to two hours. There are a few container food stalls near the temple if you would like to stay for the sunset.
