ADVOCATING TO END THE DEATH PENALTY IN TAIWAN
Details
Every day, people are executed and sentenced to death by states as punishment for a variety of crimes – sometimes for acts that should not be criminalized. The death penalty is the ultimate form of state violence: cruel, inhuman, and irreversible. Amnesty International opposes capital punishment in all cases without exception – regardless of who is accused, the nature or circumstances of the crime, guilt or innocence or method of execution.
In Taiwan, 36 people are currently on death row. The average wait between sentencing and execution is 13 years, with some individuals held in limbo for more than two decades. The death penalty remains deeply divisive: while abolitionist movements continue to grow, public opinion in Taiwan still largely supports its use. Meanwhile, those sentenced to death endure years of psychological torture, isolation, and uncertainty — out of sight, but very much present.
Join us for an evening with Taiwan Alliance to End the Death Penalty and Amnesty International Taiwan Group 34, who advocate for reform while engaging in letter-writing to maintain connections between people on death row and the broader society. The speakers will unpack the history and legal framework of the death penalty in Taiwan, examine how it is applied in practice, and share how they are organising to end capital punishment, while offering direct support to people living on death row.
The event will also include a collective letter-writing action to prisoners facing execution, affirming their humanity and reminding them that they have not been forgotten.
