Small commercial drones and the flight control systems that enable their use, collectively, Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) represent a growing type of operational technology. Like other OT, raise security considerations that exceed (or at least differ from) those from traditional information technology. The promising new applications for sUAS, including the parcel delivery drones being developed by Amazon, UPS and Walmart, require market and public trust in the cyber risk mitigation for these flying robots. Those risks include supply chain security, an increasingly troubling concern in light of the Great Power Competition that exists between China and the United States.
Harry Wingo is a faculty member in Cyber Security Studies at the National Defense University’s College of Information and Cyberspace, provided testimony to Congress in a June 2019 hearing on small drone security and innovation. In this (CS)2AI Fellows discussion, Mr. Wingo will discuss the near-term challenges and opportunities in the area of cybersecurity for commercial drones. His talk will cover how sUAS is being impacted by emerging technology 5G, AIML, and digital twin technology, with a focus on the policy and regulatory landscape for small drones.
