06.40 pm - Incident stories part I:
- Omar Merghany - Escalation of Serverless Costs: An Incident of AWS Lambda Expenses Surge
Omar discusses a startup incident where serverless costs rapidly escalated beyond expectations. It highlights the potential for serverless costs to spiral out of control.
The incident revolves around an AWS Lambda function initially incurring a modest $19 monthly cost, which astonishingly escalated to $11,000 within a mere 24 hours.
The case highlights the critical role of meticulous monitoring, efficient resource provisioning, robust safe guardrails, and proactive cost management in preventing catastrophic financial ramifications in serverless deployments. - Rania Mohamed - Handling a failure with the theme of acting as 1 for all and for 1
Rania will share a story about how they handled a situation for a service down - identity service (due to an incorrect cleaning activity) to a public sector customer that has a huge impact on end customers and how they managed to handle the failure and were able to handle it via the blameless culture and SRE best practices.
