What we're about

A group for (English language) writers in love with the written word. For now we're concentrating on fiction writing: short stories or novel excerpts. We meet roughly twice a month to inspire, motivate and exchange ideas. Our meetups are usually in the form of write-ins (a way of getting those words on the page and overcoming writer’s block in the company of fellow sufferers) or critique sessions (where selected members submit manuscripts and receive feedback from others). And afterwards we always make a beeline for the bar ...

Ah, and one more thing: perhaps unlike most other meetup groups, we’re not interested in augmenting our numbers so much as in building a close-knit community of writers of English fiction willing to invest in each other’s work while benefiting from regular social contact and feedback from other writers. All active writers of English fiction are welcome, but you’re likely to be deleted from the list if you remain inactive for 2 years or more. On the other hand we’d gladly have you back whenever you feel like rejoining and participating!

“I take seriously Flaubert’s statement that we must love one another in our art as the mystics love one another in God. By honoring one another’s creation we honor something that deeply connects us all, and goes beyond us.”

- Joyce Carol Oates (to honour her I retained the American spelling)

Write-in

Hotel V Frederiksplein

Bring along whatever you need to write (laptop, notebook, etc.) We'll write until 17:30 (or as long as we last) with an optional break midway. But apart from that we stay in the room and concentrate on writing (no talking or other forms of gadaboutery!) - a great opportunity to tackle writers’ block in the company of other sufferers. And we will of course collect at the bar afterwards for drinks and a chat, as usual. Hope to see you there!

February Critique Meetup

Hotel V Frederiksplein

Both submission slots are taken for this session but let us know if you’d like to submit your work for feedback at upcoming critique sessions. We usually have one per month. Newcomers are especially encouraged to attend; that entitles you to submit your own work in the near future (see guidelines below). Most of you know the drill but here it is again for newcomers (and forgetters): — You're eligible for submitting your own work if you've attended (and contributed feedback at) at least two previous critique session — If submissions are not confirmed two weeks in advance, the session will be converted to a write-in or other “writerly” activity — Submissions will be sent out roughly one week before the session to everyone signed up. Don't forget to PM us your email, if you’re attending, so we can make sure you are on the recipient list — We usually critique two manuscripts per session, and the word limit is 7500 words per manuscript. We can, however, make room for longer pieces if there's only one submission for that session — If you are submitting part of a larger work, then please include a short summary (upto 500 words) of the context of the submission — There is a limit of 15 participants per session and everyone present will get a chance to give their feedback and comments to the two writers. In particular it is important to make your critique as balanced and honest as possible, making sure to point out a few things you like as well as what you think could be improved, and why. We request you to PLEASE bring a printout of each manuscript containing your critique, and to hand these over to the writers at the end We’ll start at 15:00 and aim to finish by 17:30, with a short break in between. And we will of course hit the bar for drinks afterwards!
