The Durham Analytics Day is a online event where academic and industry experts discuss how analytics can enhance decision-making processes.

The event is supported by the Analytics Network of the Operational Research (OR) Society, Durham University Operational Research and Data Analytics Student Group, and the Centre of Innovation and Technology Management, Durham University Business School.

The event will host three different speakers who will provide insights on a wide range of topics, and will be followed by Q&A. The event will also include a networking opportunity with speakers

1st Speaker: Eduardo Contreras Cortes, Principal Consultant at 4most

Talk: Machine Learning applications in Credit Risk

This talk will cover the applications of Machine Learning in UK Financial Services and in specific in credit risk. The talk will cover why Machine Learning is perceived as a Black Box, the impact of Covid on these types of models and the process to make Machine Learning safe and robust to use

2nd Speaker: Professor Frank Krauss, Director, Institute for Data Science at Durham University

Talk: Introducing IDAS - the Durham Institute for Data Science

In this talk the newly founded Institute for Data Science and its goals and mission will be introduced. Some recent and ongoing activities will be discussed, including challenges in remote monitoring of plants health, the extraction of laws governing complex systems in the physical world, and the construction of a digital twin of the UK population to model the ongoing COVID pandemic

3rd Speaker: Ángela Castillo-Gill, Senior Data Scientist at Deliveroo

Talk: Building Products with Good Enough Decisions

A product is the sum of many small decisions. On one hand, we want to ensure that we get as many of those small decisions right to build a successful product. On the other hand, when the cost of product delay is high, we need to ensure that we get as many decisions right. This talk will cove to do balance good decision making with quick decision making
