The Good, the Bad & the Unequal

Are all forms of inequality inherently unfair, or can some inequalities be justified? What's the difference between “good” and “bad” inequality and how do we differentiate between fairness, merit, privilege, opportunity, and justice?

Is it fair for someone to earn more because they have greater skills, education, or responsibility? What about differences in wealth that come simply from being born into a wealthy family? And if two people have the same opportunities but make very different choices, should we expect them to have the same outcomes?
When is inequality completely reasonable or even beneficial—and when does it become unfair, harmful, or unjust?
