Visionary Society is a way to find the heart of any topic, to challenge each other to be more than we are. It is reconceiving the basic categories by which we judge our lives. This is the real Independence Day. It is not just political freedom. It’s freedom from our archaic belief systems. From politics and culture. Freedom to think for ourselves.
The Great No begins with rejection of everything. It is a day for non-participation in corporate life, in mass media, in belief systems, in organizations – and especially in the subtle ways that we have integrated with views and motives that have been imposed from outside.
– No electronic media (Television, Internet, cell phones, etc.).
– No politics, entertainment, religion, nationalism.
– No materialism (Buying or selling).
– No artificial mood changes (Recorded music, alcohol or drugs, etc.)
– No small talk.Question everything, especially publicly exhorted views and the narrative controlled by the powers that be. Go deeper. Question your identity, instincts, and beliefs. Resist all forms of external determinism, including biology, culture and ideology. Refuse to participate in anything that is false, illusory, idolatrous, trivial or degraded. Stop adulating leaders. Do not succumb to the pressure of the everyday.
The Great No is the first in a series of alternative holidays we are inventing to present Visionary Society, not just here in Anchorage but anywhere. Turn a political issue into a Quest
Every time a political issue is presented to us we can look for a deeper way, one not based on superiority or coercion. Take it as an opportunity to transform the field on which opposing parties meet, so that they no longer meet in opposition. Reconstruct any hopeless political issue and make it Visionary. Select a political issue, and we will work together to turn it into Quest.Pledge
Stop taking sides.
Don’t believe what you are told by politicians or the media.
Don't assume that our present choices are a permanent fact.
Listen deeply to views you don’t agree with.
Instead of demanding change ask for empathy, contrition and reflection.
Find a way that changes assumptions and that works at the heart level.
Vote by what you actually do in the course of the day.Politics is poison: It teaches us to take one side or another and subdue our opponents. Do not vote for a second-rate way of life, even if it is the lesser of two evils. We can do better. Join us to discuss what it means to turn a political issue into a quest, to explore the pledge for visionary politics, and to understand what it means to become a visionary citizen.
