What is contra dancing? Contra dancing is a folk dance made up of long lines of couples. It has mixed origins from English country dance, Scottish country dance, and French dance styles in the 17th century. The footwork is simple, and all dances are called so that you don’t have to memorize any steps.
Beginners are always welcome! You don’t need a partner or any previous dance experience to enjoy this event. At 7pm there will be a new dancer instruction so newcomers can learn the basics before the live music starts at 7:30. Anyone can ask anyone else to dance; experienced dancers are happy to help new people. Be sure to wear loose fitting clothes, comfortable shoes, and come ready to move!
What to bring:
- A water bottle
- Clothes that you’re comfortable moving in
- Comfortable, clean shoes
Cost: All of our dances are pay-what-you-can events! A $10 donation is suggested to cover costs of the hall, caller, band & sound technician, but please pay what you can. Credit cards/cash/Venmo/Paypal accepted at the door.
If you enjoy our dances, check out other social dances organized through the Ann Arbor Community for Traditional Music and Dance (AACTMAD). There's a contra dance in Ann Arbor almost every Saturday night, most of which are AACTMAD events. Some are put on by other organizations. All are fun. Most dances begin at 7:30. You can view a full calendar of events at https://aactmad.org/.
Happy dancing!
