Sunday Outing in DC: National Portrait Gallery & Lunch at District Bites

Details

This Sunday, let’s enjoy one of D.C.’s treasures—the National Portrait Gallery—followed by a relaxed lunch at District Bites, just a few minutes’ walk away.
The museum itself is a slice of American history. Housed in the Greek Revival building once known as the Old Patent Office, its walls have seen remarkable moments: Abraham Lincoln’s second inauguration ball was held here in 1865, and during the Civil War the soaring Kogod Courtyard was converted into a hospital ward. Today, instead of cots and soldiers, you’ll find natural light streaming through a spectacular glass canopy, with visitors lounging among lush plantings and water features. The Portrait Gallery is free to enter and always rewarding—you’ll wander past presidents, cultural icons, and the works of artists who’ve defined the American story.
Afterward, we’ll head to District Bites, a lively, casual spot inside Gallery Place. It’s one of the best-rated nearby eateries (consistently pulling in raves online) and perfect for groups since it’s walk-in friendly. The menu is playful and eclectic—locals swear by the crispy egg rolls, hearty burgers, and Detroit-style pizzas. Diners especially praise the “Smashburger” and the truffle fries, and even picky eaters report leaving happy. The atmosphere is fun without being fussy, making it an easy place to relax after time in the galleries.
Details:

  • Meet at the main entrance of the National Portrait Gallery (8th & G NW) around 12:30 a.m.

  • Afterwards, we’ll walk over to District Bites for lunch.

This is an outing that combines art, history, and food in the heart of the city—a chance to appreciate the past, enjoy the present, and share it all together.
