Mommie Dearest - with intro commentary by Ann Glenn Cruse (see trailer below)

Bow Tie Cinemas at the Harbour Center continues its weekly "Cine Classic" film series with the 1981 bio pic, Mommie Dearest.

"Over-the-top" doesn't begin to describe the outlandishness of this film version of Christina Crawford's memoir of life with her Hollywood- icon mother, Joan.  The movie is a top contender for a place in the "so bad it's good" genre.

When first released the studio marketed the film as a straight drama but when reports came back audiences were laughing during screenings the studio revamped their ad campaign to showcase the film as a campy romp. It's enjoyed a cult following ever since.

Some say Fay Dunaway's career never quite recovered from her scene chewing histronics as the OCD-challenged Miss Crawford.

Here's the original trailer:

On Saturday May 11, starting at 10:30 a.m., I'll give a 25 minute talk before the film featuring information about its production and behind-the-scenes stories and trivia.

Admission is $5.50 ($4.50 with a Bow Tie free Criterion Club card which can be obtained online at Bow Tie's website or at the theater.)

Be sure to check Bow Tie Harbour 9's website for the complete list of weekend Cine Classic films scheduled for May.

I'll be doing presentations, beginning at 10:30 a.m., for each film at its Saturday screening.

Hope to see lots of fellow Annapolis Movie Club members Saturday mornings at Bow Tie Harbour 9.
