Annapolis Library Winter Film Series: Shakespeare in Cinema

The immortal dramas of William Shakespeare have inspired countless motion pictures. In our winter series we’ll view four, all borrowing either characters from a Shakespeare play or whole plots created by him. From a rousing Broadway musical to a classic science fiction film, Shakespeare’s genius continues to play a part in our cinema heritage. Each film is introduced by area cinephile Ann Glenn with info about the film’s background, production and followed by a lively Q&A session.

Forbidden Planet (1956) Saturday, January 31, 2pm
Adapting the plot of Shakespeare’s final play, The Tempest, this sci-fi movie classic blends adventure, horror and impressive-for-their-time visuals. It’s credited with being the first motion picture set entirely on another planet suggesting faster-than-light travel. 1 hr. 38 mins. Rated G.
