While many a successful play has been adapted for film, some movie adaptations became classics of the genre and in our summer series we’ll examine a few of the very best. Each movie is introduced by area cinephile Ann Glenn with info about the film’s background and production and followed by an always lively Q&A session.
The Heiress (1949) Monday, July 13, 5pm
This drama of a naïve young woman with an emotionally withholding father would win Olivia de Havilland her second Best Actress Oscar. The film would also receive Best Picture, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor nominations. Based on the Broadway play of the same name, itself an adaptation of the Henry James novel Washington Square. 1hr. 59 mins., Not rated
