Welcome to the **Urban Sunset Hike (USH) Series**, where we take a twilight/sunset/night walk around the cities we live in. Bring a headlamp or flashlight or use your phone flashlight app.

Tonight we will walk around **Page Mill Road** in Palo Alto, where there is a heavy concentration of tech companies, bordering Stanfurd University and the VA Hospital.

This 5-mile urban night walk covers:

* Bol Park Native Garden
* **Barron Park donkeys**
* Arastradero Rd path & Bol Park path
* Gunn HS, one of the best HS in CA
* tech companies: HP Inc, Nest, PARC, VMwave, EPRI
* Moore Foundation
* Bonus Mile: Sand Hill Property

**Page Mill Road trivia:** The first European settler, Danish immigrant Christian Iverson, split redwood shakes for a living. He built a cabin along Pescadero Creek in the 1860s. In 1889, Iverson sold his property to William Page, a successful lumberman. Page ran a shingle mill just east of the present-day Slate Creek trail camp. He also established a haul road connecting several mills to the Embarcadero in Palo Alto. This haul road, later named Page Mill Road, still exists today.

**HPE trivia:** HP Enterprises, maker of supercomputers, moved out of Palo Alto to North San Jose in 2019, only to announce in Dec 2020, another move to Houston in 2021. It also purchased Cray in 2019. Note: HP Inc, maker of PCs and printers, is still at HP's Palo Alto site, after splitting with HPE in 2015.
