💡 Speaker:

James Gollan, Staff Solutions Engineer, Confluent

Bio:

James is a Staff Solutions Engineer at Confluent. His job involves discussing technical and business challenges with many large organisations, and determining the role that event streaming can play in meeting these challenges. Of particular interest to James is stream processing, how it can be used to build microservices and other applications with highly focussed data products, and how this all relates to data mesh.

Talk:

Building Kafka for High Availability - the non-functional stuff

Abstract:

In the world of distributed systems, Kafka stands out for its high availability design. However, achieving high availability often involves setting Service Level Agreements (SLAs), which can be confusing and difficult to optimize. Furthermore, SLAs may not be the best way to define your non-functional requirements.

This presentation aims to clarify the meaning of SLAs and explore alternative ways to define non-functional requirements. We’ll also discuss how these requirements change with different Kafka implementations, and provide practical tips for optimizing your Kafka setup to achieve the desired level of availability.

💡 Speaker:
David Masillamani, Site Reliability Engineer, IBM

Bio:
David is a Site Reliability Engineer at IBM, where he is the SRE for EventStreams, which is a high-throughput message bus built with Apache Kafka. Before IBM, he worked for various product and financial firms as an SRE and DevOps engineer.

Talk:
Lessons learnt from operating Apache Kafka clusters at Scale at IBM

Abstract:
Operating hundreds of Kafka clusters and dealing with incidents on a weekly basis has taught us a vast amount. We have gained in-depth knowledge of how to diagnose and resolve problems rapidly and accurately to ensure no or minimal impact on end users.

Despite its fault-tolerant design, there will be times when things in your Kafka cluster are not working as expected. Many of the problems are either due to self-inflicted issues, infrastructure problems, bugs within Kafka, or clients starving resources. It's crucial to identify the right root cause to avoid any further issues.

For this presentation, will share some of the most interesting problems we encountered with our clusters and some of the tools and solutions used to triage and resolve problems with your Kafka clusters.
