Geospatial Support in Apache Pinot

Geospatial data has been widely used across industry, spanning multiple verticals, such as ride-sharing and delivery, transportation infrastructure, defense and intel, public health. Deriving insights from timely and accurate geospatial data could enable mission-critical use cases in the organizations and fuel a vibrant marketplace across industry.

In this talk, we introduce the geospatial support added in Pinot 0.6 release, including the geospatial data model, functions, as well as the indexing for better query performance. We will also demonstrate the power geospatial support by walking through a UberEats use case “orders-near-you”. After switching from the KV store to Pinot, it overcame a storage bottleneck to handle thousands of QPS and reduced the query latency by 10X.
