What we’re about
The Apalachee Canoe & Kayak Club is for anyone interested in canoeing and kayaking in the North Florida Panhandle. The club was organized in the 1970s by local paddlers who got together to enjoy the many paddling opportunities in the North Florida panhandle. We hold monthly meetings with related programs and discussions on past and future paddling events. This club has a deep bench of experience and knowledge. If you are new to paddling and are looking for advice - the ACKC has you covered. Suppose you are experienced and are just looking for peeps to paddle with - we gotcha. All skill levels are welcome.
Some of our favorite local rivers are listed here. Sopchoppy, Chipola, Upper Ochlockonee, Upper St. Marks, Aucilla River, Wacissa River, Omussee Creek - Alabama, Econfina Creek (Bay Co.), Econfina River (Taylor Co.). There are many other seldom-used creeks and streams to the East and West of Tallahassee, and the coastal waters of the Big Bend provide lots of paddling opportunities.
NOTE: The ACKC insurance waiver must be filled out by anyone wishing to participate in a club event (irrespective of club membership status). Children (17 years or younger) on any sponsored ACKC trips must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian and have a waiver submitted for them by their parent or legal guardian.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Apalachee Canoe and Kayak Club Celebrates 50th Anniversary with the ACKC Jubilee Event
Tallahassee, Florida — The Apalachee Canoe and Kayak Club (ACKC) is happy to celebrate its 50th anniversary with the ACKC Jubilee, a month of events in June to honor the club’s history in paddling and building a community of paddlers in North Florida.
Founded in 1975, the ACKC has been a key place for paddling fans of all ages and skill levels. The club's first meeting was on June 26, 1975, at the Myers Park Community Room, led by Foster Rosser, Elizabeth Carter, and Art Owens. They played a significant role in starting paddlesports in the Florida Panhandle when canoeing and kayaking were uncommon, and information about paddling routes was mostly shared by word of mouth.
In the 1970s and 80s, the club helped promote paddlesport in the area. ACKC inspired the creation of other paddling groups, like the West Florida Canoe Club and the Wiregrass Canoe Club in Alabama. It also helped form the Florida Canoe and Kayaking Association, which supported paddlesport and organized an annual Paddle Fest.
ACKC has made significant contributions to the Paddling Trails program with the Department of Environmental Protection, participated in the American Rivers Florida Rivers Survey, and served on the Florida Recreational Trails Council and the Florida Greenways Commission. Club members have also taken on our paddling trips with political figures, including two governors and three senators, to raise environmental awareness.
In 1979, an ACKC member wrote a popular booklet called "Downriver Canoeing in Florida's Big Bend," which led to a grander project, "A Canoeing Guide to the Streams of Florida, Vol. I," created with help from many club members.
The ACKC Jubilee will feature various special events to combine members, supporters, and the community. Highlights include:
- June 18th Reception
- Location: Lake Jackson Community Center
- 3840 N Monroe St APT 301, Tallahassee, FL 32303

This stretch of waterway offers a mix of scenic beauty, diverse wildlife, and tranquil paddling through Florida’s lush natural environment.
The Ochlockonee is home to a variety of wildlife, so keep an eye out for graceful herons, egrets, playful otters, and the elusive alligator. Ospreys and bald eagles often soar overhead, searching for fish in the river’s waters, while turtles will bask on stickups.
As you approach Lake Talquin, the river widens, opportunities to spot waterfowl gliding across the surface. Whether you're here for adventure or simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere, this paddle promises a relaxing experience in the heart of North Florida’s wild.

Paddlers must be willing to assist with the vehicle shuttle as requested by the trip leader. The launch landing is west of the bridge with parking area on the south side of 90.
- Due to shuttle requirement paddlers must be at launch site with boats unloaded and staged for launch by 9AM. Shuttle will commence at 9AM. Shuttle of vehicles is distance of 7mi one way.
- With this schedule the launch is expected before 9:30AM for 3hr, 7mi paddle. Arrival at Coe Landing should easily occur before 12:30PM getting us off of the water before the hottest part of the day and potential summer afternoon storms.
- There are no planned stops along the way.
- No restroom is available at launch but there are restrooms at Coe Landing.
- Current on river is expected to be low to nonexistent for majority of trip. Almost no development exists along the route. The river braids several miles from the launch into marshy area and no obstructions are expected. There is about one mile of open lake before arriving at Coe Landing.
- Weather is expected to be hot and humid with lots of sun so bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and protective clothing. Insect repellent not expected to be necessary but recommended to carry.
- Minimal motor boat traffic is expected. However, some waves due to boat traffic and/or wind may occur.
- Bring a lunch. We can eat together at the covered pavilion at Coe Landing after the paddle.
📑 REMINDERS: All Paddlers must have completed the ACKC Insurance Waiver for 2025. To be fair to your fellow paddlers, boats must be unloaded and staged for launch by 9AM.
WEATHER STATEMENT: We want everyone to enjoy the paddle but we all must be mindful of the weather. Paddling is a water sport and NOT a lightning dodging sport.
Rain and even thunder storms are typical as we move into the summer. We will be meeting as planned even if there is spotty or light rain forecast. We will NOT launch if there is lightning or the threat thereof during the planned trip. If severe weather is forecast as likely, the paddle will be called off by the trip leader at least two hours prior (by way of Meetup message and email to ACKC Club Members). All paddlers should use their own judgement and accept personal responsibility as to weather hazards at the time of the launch.
SHUTTLE EXPLANATION/DESCRIPTION: After all boats and equipment are unloaded at the launch location, at least one paddler will remain with the equipment while the remainder of paddlers will drive their vehicles to the takeout. One or more shuttle vehicles will load all of these paddlers for transport back to the launch site. At the end of the paddle, the shuttle paddlers who have left their vehicles at the launch will be transported back. If possible, their equipment will be either transported to the launch site with them or they may need to drive back to the takeout to retrieve.
