Phipps Park Hike (Tuesdays)
Details
Phipps Park provides a wonderful opportunity for wilderness hiking inside the city. The trails are interesting and moderately challenging, featuring mature forest, wetlands, creek beds, ravines, and meadows, with the possibility of seeing wildlife. Some routes will include an overlook at Lake Jackson with bald eagle habitat.
This is an approximately 3-4 mile hike on a single track, primitive footpath in the woods, with lots of ups and downs and exposed tree roots. Hiking poles are recommended. We'll hike at a speed of 2.5-3.0 mph. Come at 8:50 and be ready to start at 9:00.
There is no water available, so be sure to bring your own. Wear comfortable shoes. Apply bug repellent and sunscreen as needed. Snacks optional. There is a port-o-let by the Gate A parking lot, but it is sometimes in need of servicing.
We will meet in the parking lot at Gate A, located at 1275 Miller Landing Road. This is 1/2 mile PAST the soccer complex on the left. NOTE: This is NOT the trail entrance at Meadows Soccer Complex. GO PAST the soccer fields for about 1/2 mile, and Gate A is on the left.
Arrive at 8:45 for sign up. We will hike at 9:00.
Please use the Meetup app to sign up and for questions of general interest. That is where updates will be posted regarding the weather, cancellation, etc. Activity co-leaders: Ike Eberstein 850-566-1024 text preferred or email ieberstein@aol.com, and Erice Shepard 448-241-0972 text preferred or email ericeshepard3@gmail.com
