ape99 is loosely based on the 100th monkey effect. this is a phenomenon in which a learned behavior spreads instantaneously from one group to all related groups once a critical mass is reached. in Lyall Watson’s 1979 book Lifetide, he tells of a group of scientists who observed a group of macaques that learned to wash sweet potatoes, allowing them to eat more of each potato. through observation and repetition, the younger generation of monkeys adopted this new behavior. the researchers noted that once a critical number – the 100th monkey – was reached, this previously learned behavior instantly spread across the water to monkeys on nearby islands. when the theory is extrapolated to apply to humankind, it applies to the first few adopters of new technology who are frequently mocked and ignored at best as being on the fringe. but when the flashpoint of early adopters has been reached, the technology then gains widespread acceptance. Like most things in our modern society, this story is somewhat embellished, but the core sociological ideals are sound. in today’s world, most of these adopters are the young of the group, while most of the older monkeys just keep to their routine, except for a few more interested adults. gradually, the behavior spreads until critical mass is reached, thereby becoming an innate part of the culture. the purpose of ape99 is to disburse, improve upon and invent technologies for living as natural and sustainable a lifestyle as possible. the main core of ape99 knowledge base is rooted firmly in Permaculture.
