API Athens #Β4

Details
We're back with our fourth meetup event, featuring high-level architecture presentations on API frameworks and platform building.
We will also be giving away two free tickets for OpenConf at the end of the event.
Special thanks to Orfium for sponsoring and hosting our meetup.
Arrival - 18:00
Talk #1 - 18:15
From Fragmentation to Standardization: Shaping a Unified API Experience
In this presentation, we’ll explore the journey of standardizing APIs within an expanding ecosystem of backend services. We’ll examine the challenges of managing fragmented APIs and reveal the strategies used to establish consistency. Discover how naming conventions, error handling, and versioning techniques were combined with automation to enforce a robust API framework. This talk will provide practical insights into building cohesive and scalable APIs, drawing from real-world implementations and lessons learned along the way.
Antonis Markoulis - Orfium
Antonis Markoulis is a Senior Staff Engineer at Orfium, where he is responsible for driving technical excellence and mentoring software engineers, while also playing a key role in the design of complex software systems. With a background in physics, Antonis developed a passion for simulations, which became his gateway into the world of software development. Since then, he has held various roles across multiple sectors, including simulations, cybersecurity and, more recently, the music industry. Antonis brings extensive experience in the entire software development lifecycle—from concept to client delivery—and is deeply committed to delivering high-quality software on time.
Talk #2 - 19:00
Designing And Implementing A Capability - Based Platform
In this session, we’ll explore the complexities faced during the redesign of Vodafone’s corporate IT backend and the journey to modernize the corporate infrastructure. Christos will share how the challenge of future-proofing systems led to the development of "CELL", a Kubernetes-based microservices platform aligned with the TMForum ODA architecture. Learn how capability-based design principles were applied to orient the infrastructure towards simplicity, focusing on capabilities rather than systems, and how this approach prevented duplication and improved scalability.
Christos Sotiriou - Vodafone
Christos Sotiriou is a Principal Architect at Vodafone with over 18 years of experience in the software industry. He specializes in designing platforms that modernize corporate IT, focusing on scalability and future-proofing. With expertise in Cloud Native technologies, Microservices, Enterprise Architecture, Kubernetes and frontend environments, he has designed and led major projects for companies like Vodafone, Atcom S.A., Taxiplon and more.
