How to Create Visual Controls People Will Actually Use

Description:

Your Work Drives Your Visualization. Sometimes your online or physical kanban works, sometimes it falls down. The reason is simple: your visualization doesn't fit your work.

On September 12, 2024, guest speaker Jim Benson will share practical techniques for designing visual systems that go beyond simply tracking work items, enabling teams to visualize their entire workflow, respond to changes seamlessly, and foster an environment of learning, quality, and human support.

Speaker Bio:

Jim Benson’s career has seen him build light rail systems and neighborhoods as an urban planner, enterprise software and web sites for major government agencies as the co-owner of Gray Hill Solutions and, most recently, helping create better working environments for teams of all sizes as a Lean collaborative management consultant with Modus Cooperandi. Throughout his career, Jim has been focused on project management - be it for small personal projects to enterprise software projects all the way up to public construction projects worth hundreds of millions of dollars.

Jim’s management style has always focused on providing maximum information to every team member to improve decision making and foster continuous improvement. His creation of Personal Kanban, a tool to visualize work and reward quality, is one manifestation of this dedication.

Jim has worked with corporate, government, and not-for-profit organizations of all sizes. From start-ups to Fortune 10 companies to the United Nations, he helps clients create sustainable collaborative management systems. He and his company Modus Cooperandi combine Lean principles from manufacturing, Agile methodologies from software design, and recent revolutions of cognitive psychology, as process and tool infrastructure. The key to making those tools work, however, is developing a culture that supports them.

Jim is the creator of Personal Kanban and a pioneer in the field of Lean Management. His book Personal Kanban, which he co-authored with his Modus Institute co-founder Tonianne DeMaria, is a global bestseller and winner of the Shingo Prize in 2013. He is also a fellow in the Lean Systems Society and a 2012 winner of the Brickell Key Award for Excellence in Lean Thinking. Jim’s other books include Why Plans Fail and Beyond Agile.

His latest book is The Collaboration Equation.
