Copilot Programming in MeteorJS: Is AI a Game-Changer or Just Hype? – TWIM #78

Details

Episode 78: 27 March 2025

To hear it from leaders at Meta, Open AI, Salesforce, Nvidia, Replit, and Anthropic, engineers should start planning their career funerals - and quickly. Anthropic's CEO predicts that in as soon as 12 months, AI will be writing nearly all the code in the world. Don't assume you have much breathing space; Dario Amodei, that CEO, also said that in six months, AI would generate 90% of all new code. Yeah, and Claude's doesn't care about PTO, your vesting schedule, or how you're going to pay for that destination wedding you're planning.

But how much of this is hype? The internet and e-commerce was going to make everything cheaper by cutting out the middlemen (disintermediation). But while direct to consumer sometimes works, far more often you need marketers to connect buyers to producers. Marketing and advertising didn't die from the internet. Instead it flourished because of it. Personal printers were predicted to end commercial publishing. Offshoring promised to kill off high-cost engineers for less-expensive-but-just-as-good-foreign-workers. And while offshore contract teams are a thing, it didn't kill off opportunities back home. In each of these cases, the radical change predicted failed to materialize the way industry soothsayers claimed.

New tech is a just another lever. It's important to look past the hype to understand how the lever works, what it can do, and where it's power ends. The Jan brothers and Alim attempt to do so while evaluating different LLMs and code generation tools that are being marketed as capable at building software as the average engineer. They will share that methodology so you can do the same.
