Details

Update as of 2/24/25: This workshop is now full, but we are accepting people on the waitlist. Please see the info in the text below. Thanks!

Does your lack of bike repair knowledge worry you when you're on a ride? Take this hands-on class to learn about your bike’s key mechanical systems and practice basic “field” repairs to get yourself back riding in the case of a road- or trail-side mechanical issue. The workshop is indoors and will be held rain or shine.

More info: Registration is required: see special details below about how to register for this AMC-DV "Field Trip." Participants should bring their bike if possible and be prepared to get their hands (a little bit) dirty! We'll have a short break for lunch; please bring lunch with you if desired (there will not be time to go out).

Course outline:

  1. Overview of bike parts and their names.
  2. Tools, parts, etc., to carry with you on a ride and to have at home.
  3. Pre-ride check “ABCDEs.”
  4. How to remove and replace front and rear wheels.
  5. Fixing a flat tire.
  6. Minor shifting adjustments.
  7. Dealing with a broken chain.
  8. Minor brake adjustments.
  9. Dealing with a broken spoke and/or bent wheel.
  10. Routine maintenance to do at home.
  11. Q&A, other issues as time allows.

Special Registration Info: This workshop is an AMC Field Trip event: a type of AMC experience designed to explore a particular aspect of the great outdoors. Field Trips are open to both AMC members and non-members, but members get priority and attend for free. There are 10 spots available for this workshop. Everyone will be waitlisted pending registration as noted below. Note: space is FULL as of 2/24/25, please add your name to the waitlist.
