Walking the Portuguese Camino de Santiago
presented by Greg and Jane Cook
Most people think of the Camino de Santiago (or way of St. James) as the 800-kilometer walk beginning in France and ending in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. This is the Camino Francés, the most travelled route made popular by the 2010 movie, “The Way.”
But the Camino is actually many different ancient paths across Europe, all with a common destination. Greg and Jane Cook’s Camino began in Porto, Portugal, which is known as the Portuguese Way. They covered 262 kilometers in 20 days last fall, walking three variants of the traditional way to Santiago de Compostela.
For many, walking the Camino is a lifetime experience of reflection and contemplation. Others walk the Way as a physical and mental challenge or as a cross-cultural experience. No matter whether you see yourself as a pilgrim on a spiritual journey or an adventurer on a long-distance hike (or both), all walkers share a common experience as they put one foot in front of the other. Yes, it’s hard, but hardly impossible. Almost anyone can do it if they try. And it’s all worth trying.
Follow along with Greg and Jane and see if the Camino is something that calls to you.
We will be meeting in person at Illick’s Mill in Bethlehem (100 Illick's Mill Road) as well as on Zoom for the May meeting. Info on upcoming AMC activities will also be discussed at this meeting.
