JACOBSBURG STATE EEC: GRAND TOUR HIKE

Details

Join us as we circle the varied 1,168-acre expanse of Jacobsburg. Our hike will reach all corners of the park property and include shaded woodlands, successional fields, trails along the Bushkill Creek and its tributaries, and enough moderate ups and downs for a good workout. Surface ranges from gravel footpaths, to mowed grass, to rocky trails, to one short road walk. Total distance is around 8 miles with elevation gain about 700 feet.

Jacobsburg is 4 miles north of Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and positioned as an easy to access park between the Blue Mountain and cities and suburbs of the Lehigh Valley. It boasts 19 miles of trails, abundant space for wildlife, clean water for aquatic life, and the remains of a colonial-era village.

In our attempt to stay ahead of the July heat, we’ll start by 9 AM and keep breaks for hydration and snacks brief. The hike is rated as vigorous for its length and varied surfaces but is not technical. Poles may be helpful for some.

Following the hike, all are invited to an optional lunch and ice cream social at Mountainview Drive-In restaurant at the edge of the park.

Be advised that, in addition to the normal concerns with staying hydrated in midsummer heat and humidity, major outbreaks of ticks have been reported this season in the Lehigh Valley area. Dress with this concern in mind and be vigilant for ticks on skin and clothing during and after the hike.

Should the status of the hike be in doubt due to any form of threatening weather, phone/text leader by 7:30 that morning. The leader also reserves the option to adjust the length of hike if conditions warrant. Leader Welles Lobb. 610-709-4455.

Please note: In order to comply with Pennsylvania Youth Protection Laws, all children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. This policy applies for all events offered by the Delaware Valley Chapter as well as any other Chapter events within the state of Pennsylvania.

Also, Meetup participants must sign the AMC waiver form at the gathering site prior to the activity.
