SUNSET SERIES HIKE: SOUTH MOUNTAIN PRESERVE, EMMAUS, PA

Details

Explore a portion of one of Lehigh Valley’s finest hiking properties, South Mountain Preserve. This 4.2-mile evening trek showcases some of the preserve’s best features, including a large boulder outcrop, several small stream crossings, and a diminutive waterfall. Expect a steady 599 feet of elevation gain, mostly in the first two miles, followed by a delightfully meandering descent back to your car.

The hike is rated moderate for its climbing and uneven terrain but is not technical overall. Bring enough fluids for two hours of activity and anticipate warm conditions. Poles may be helpful in navigating rocky and steep sections of trail.

Meet by 5:20 for a 5:30 start. Our trailhead is on Alpine Street at Boroline Park, Emmaus. Park in small lot or on street, both adjacent to trail system entrance.

South Mountain Preserve is owned/managed by the Emmaus-based Wildlands Conservancy. Together with the city of Allentown, this property protects more than 800 acres of woodlands and streams and offers 10 miles of interconnected trails at the edge of some of the area’s most intensely developed land.

This hike is the final of ten Sunset Series activities hosted by the Lehigh Valley Group of the Delaware Valley Chapter. With help from six volunteer leaders, we’ve enjoyed a wide range of 90 minute-to-2 hour hikes every other Thursday evening from May to September.
Please note: Any warm weather activity comes with the risk of high humidity, severe storms, biting bugs, ticks, etc. Please dress accordingly and be mindful of your safety.

Participants are invited to an optional post-hike meal at Superior Restaurant, a nearby local landmark in the diner tradition.

If hike status is in question due to weather, phone/text leader by 4 PM. Leader Welles Lobb. 610-709-4455.
Please note: In order to comply with Pennsylvania Youth Protection Laws, all children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by their parent or legal guardian. This policy applies for all events offered by the Delaware Valley Chapter as well as any other Chapter events within the state of Pennsylvania.

Meetup participants must sign a waiver form prior to the start of the hike.
