Maine Woods Initiative Project
Guest speaker - Steve Tatko, AMC’s Vice President of Land & Conservation
Join Steve Tatko, AMC’s Vice President of Land and Conservation to learn about the past 20 years of the Maine Woods Initiative Project. To date the project has grown to 127,000 acres of AMC ownership, built new recreational trails, expanded the outdoor economy, begun the slow process of forest restoration, restored 162 miles of streams, and strengthened local communities through permanent connections to this critical landscape. The project continues to carry momentum after successfully protecting the 28,800-acre Barnard Forest in September of 2025. As we enter 2026, momentum sped up as the AMC is now working to add the 29,000 acre Whitecap Highlands Forest to the MWI lands which will one day grow AMC’s ownership to 157,000 acres. The project has gained national attention and continues to innovate new ways of ecological restoration while advancing outdoor recreation and protecting and enhancing local community relationships to the land.
