Coventry Woods, A Brisk Hike of 9 ish Miles.
Details
A brisk hike of about 9.5 miles. Coventry Woods is an attractive, well kept township park in North Coventry Twp., Chester County. It contains 688 acres with the nearby and accessible Woody's Woods containing 260 acres. We are late enough in the season that the stilt grass has subsided. Trails are leaf covered. The area is not often crowded. Parking is in a somewhat obscure lot down a one way single track road which is the extension of Fernbrook Lane. Keep going past the first lot ... take first left ... look for the grey car with the open trunk. Googling "Coventry Woods" will often take you to the wrong lot. Think Fernbrook Lane.
This venue was chosen as it is hunting season in PA. While Sunday hunting has become de rigueur, state parks allow it only on three Sundays. This is one of those Sundays. These two township parks do not allow Sunday hunting (although orange is never a terrible idea).
Please come planning to keep up. This is not an easy hike. No severe elevation but enough to keep it interesting. Bailouts are difficult. Please come knowing that you have hiked ten miles at speed (say 2.5 mph overall) recently. Bring water and calories for 4 or 5 hours in the woods. A fully charged cell phone is always a good idea but note - coverage can be spotty. There are plastic facilities nearby the trail head. Pleasant demeanor required. Lunch breaks occur on the hikes of others. Questions or concerns, please text or call George at 484.919.6000.
Plan on signing AMC's waiver of liability at the trailhead. While you are encouraged to sign up on the AMC website, please sign up on Meetup if possible as it allows for rapid dissemination of information, associates an image with your name, allows me to guess how often you hike, and let's your fellow hikers know who is coming. If I don't know you, please give me a method of communication.
Rain cancels. I'll post on Meetup 2+ hours before if it looks like a problem. I tend to err on the side of caution. Many of the trails here don't match the map; please become inured to the perplexed look on the hike leader.
