To be eligible for The American Legion, a man or woman must have served at least one day of active duty. Current and past members of the National Guard and Reserve may also be eligible for membership and should check with the Adjutant of the Post in their local community. Annual summer camps and weekend drills do not constitute eligible periods of service. Active duty is the key to Legion membership. A person need not have served overseas to be eligible, but must possess an Honorable Discharge (DD-214) or some other form of identification. You can go to https://www.archives.gov/veterans to request another copy of your discharge papers.
The American Legion's eligibility requirements are for anyone that served on federal active duty in the United States Armed Forces since December 7,1941, and have been honorably discharged or are still serving.
The Sons of the American Legion is open to sons and grandsons of veterans who meet the above criteria. The Auxiliary is open to grandmothers, mothers, sisters, spouses, and direct and adopted female descendants of veterans meeting the above criteria.
