What we’re about
Data Science presentations often show impressive results, which were also easy to develop. What is often not told is that there are also many struggles. In this meetup, by and for data scientists, we learn from each other's experiences. We learn from both the highs and the lows. We therefore not only present the end result, but also the problems that were encountered. What challenges do you face and how do you deal with them? To get a complete picture, we prefer to give a complete overview containing the business case, the machine learning solution, and the technical implementation.

AI governance is no longer a future problem, it is already reshaping the way we work. Banks are stress-testing models for bias. Healthcare teams are preparing for audits. Tech leads are rethinking how they deploy AI responsibly. Across the Dutch AI ecosystem, the pressure to align with upcoming regulations is real (and growing fast!)
In collaboration with Kickstart AI we're tackling one of the most urgent challenges in AI today: how do we govern and regulate AI in a way that's smart, ethical, and future-proof? The EU AI Act, set to be the world's first comprehensive legal framework for AI, will have major implications for anyone building, deploying, or overseeing AI systems.
This evening is all about turning complex policy into practical tools. You'll hear from people shaping AI regulation in the Netherlands, engineers testing real-world systems, and teams rolling out governance frameworks inside large organizations.
Whether you're writing the code, defining the strategy, or figuring out where compliance fits into your work, this meetup is your moment to get informed, ask questions, and prepare for what's next.
Agenda:
- 18.00 Walk-in & Registration. Dinner included!
- 18.30 Survival of the governed: Controlling enterprise AI at NS by Rens van Dongen
- 19.15 Ready for the EU AI Act? By Kaan Karahisarli and Cas Mevissen
- 20.00 The AI Act: Key aspects for AI Engineers and Data Scientists by Jurriaan Parie
What to expect
Kaan Karahisarli & Cas Mevissen - Policy Officers on AI, Dutch Ministries of Justice & Economic Affairs
The EU AI Act is the world's first legal framework for artificial intelligence. But what's actually in it - and how will it affect your work? Kaan and Cas will talk us through the key elements of the Act: from legal definitions and risk classifications to obligations for developers and deployers. You'll get an inside look at how the Dutch government is preparing for the rollout and how public institutions are translating policy into action.Jurriaan Parie - Co-founder, Stichting Algorithm Audit
In his talk, Jurriaan will discuss a public audit of a machine learning-driven (balanced random forest) risk profiling algorithm. This algorithm uses data from a driver behavior monitoring system to identify irresponsible driving behavior among clients of a car sharing platform. How can we ensure the algorithm accurately identifies irresponsible driving? How can a balance be struck between false positive and false negative predictions? And can meaningful explanation be provided to flagged users? The advice of an independent advice comission regarding these questions, as convened by NGO Algorithm Audit and the car sharing platform, consisting of a diverse group of representatives, is discussed.Rens van Dongen - AI Officer, Nederlandse Spoorwegen (Dutch Railways)
Ns has been working with AI since the '80s. Now, as the stakes grow higher, so does the need for serious governance. Rens will share how NS is implementing an internal AI Management System (AIMS) to embed security, ethics, and future-readiness into the heart of their AI practice. This talks blends strategy with engineering - and offers a real-world view on what responsible AI looks like at scale.Together with Kickstart AI we're bringing the AI Act down to earth and into your day-to-day work. Expect sharp talks, honest discussion, and plenty of space to connect with others tackling the same challenges.
